My enthusiasm for construction is part of my family history - I grew up with the Group and am deeply rooted in it. I live and love my profession as an architect.

Andrea is a planning coordinator and has already experienced a lot within the Group

After many years and stations in the STRABAG Group, Andrea chose to join us in turnkey timber construction.

  • "My first timber construction project at ZÜBLIN Timber was the new construction of our T3 office building. I suggested the name for it. It's a great feeling to be working today in the building that I helped design."

You have been closely associated with the Group since you were a child. Where does that come from?

I basically grew up with STRABAG because my father worked for the Group. My enthusiasm for construction is also part of my family history. I have been regularly on construction sites since I was three months old. The time I spent with my parents on STRABAG construction projects in Africa was particularly formative. These experiences not only shaped my close connection to construction, but also a strong personal connection to Africa. I still remember the wooden houses at the camp in Eldoret (Kenya) - perhaps my current affinity for timber construction also stems to some extent from those days.

Which Group stations have you already been able to get to know in your career?

I started my training as a draughtswoman in structural and civil engineering at STRABAG in 1989 and then studied architecture. During the semester breaks, I regularly worked in the Group to get a taste of practical experience and keep in touch with the company. As a young architect, I was then able to work in many departments such as planning, tendering and costing and gain a broad insight. I was also one of the first planning coordinators in the Group. It started quite by chance on a construction site in Düsseldorf. I had to learn a lot myself, which was very instructive. Today I have been working at STRABAG/ZÜBLIN for 29 years.

What does a planning coordinator do?

I am already involved in the early phases of timber construction projects in order to steer them onto the "right track". This means that I ensure that the planning with the specialist planners from all disciplines is provided for the construction site in accordance with the contract, economically and on time. I am also the interface between the specialist planners and project and construction management.

What fascinates you about working on construction sites?

I've always been in turnkey construction and have been constantly on construction sites from the very beginning. In the past, I was often one of the few women with a technical background and always had positive experiences. I'm also fascinated by the fact that you constantly come into contact with new people, work together as a team and, at the end of the day, you can really see what you've created together. Something long-term is created, our built environment usually lasts for decades - that motivates me every time.

Why did you switch to the world of timber construction?

After Corona, I moved from the Ruhr area to Bavaria for love and quickly realized that I felt very much at home here in the countryside. ZÜBLIN Timber had a vacancy for a planning coordinator and I simply applied for it. I was immediately enthusiastic about timber construction - because of the sustainability, the beautiful architecture and the wide range of projects. Especially in my final years of my career, I want to make a meaningful contribution to our built world and I feel that I can do just that in sustainable timber construction.

What do you particularly like about ZÜBLIN Timber?

I particularly appreciate the strong team spirit and the flat hierarchies - you really feel like part of a team or a big family. My first project at ZÜBLIN Timber was our own office building T3. Fortunately, my name suggestion for the building even won the small internal competition. Working in it myself today is a great feeling and also makes me very proud.

Is physical distance also no problem for your job?

I live in Ostallgäu and come to the office in Aichach about two to three times a week. Otherwise, I make use of the company's home office offer. The exchange with colleagues and project participants works very well, even if we are not always in the same place. We discuss planning issues easily via teams.
