I've gone from being a "wood" lateral entrant to an expert. You never stop learning and that's exactly what I want! Developing myself further and building on my strengths is part of my daily routine.

Bernhard, work preparation for timber building systems

Bernhard came to us in Aichach 12 years ago. A trained cutting machine operator specializing in turning technology, he switched from metal to wood and became aware of us in the traditional way, via an advertisement in the daily newspaper.

How was your start at ZÜBLIN Timber?

I started my career in timber construction as a machine operator in production. I quickly became familiar with the panel processing system (PBA) and manual joinery. My colleagues and supervisors were open-minded and saw that I quickly got to grips with the new tasks despite my lateral entry.

Why did you switch to the office?

Although I moved to the work preparation (WP) team in the fall of 2022 and went from the plant to the office, it wasn't a cut with my "old colleagues" for me. The collaboration with the people from Production is still very close, because without this good communication, a lot of things wouldn't run smoothly in AV. My previous work in the plant gave me a big advantage in my new job in work preparation. I knew the people and the processes and was able to estimate times better.

What do you do in work preparation?

Taking care! In work preparation, I make sure that our projects run according to plan. I'm the interface and central point of contact for my colleagues at the machines, in manual joinery, the sales team and the client. I program the control of the wooden elements for the machines and send the data to the factory.

Lone fighter or team player - do you have to discuss a lot with others in your job?

Clear answer: Team player! In my job, feedback is wanted and needed! I fully agree with the statement "Good communication is everything".
I like to work on even better communication between AV and the plant so that we can handle projects in an even more targeted way. There's always room for improvement in processes somewhere, programs are also being developed further and, with the help of digitalization, we work largely paperless in our area! I can get involved everywhere and develop myself further.

Do you always do the same thing?

Versatile work is required in this job, because timber construction projects are different. No two buildings are the same, and our customers' requirements are also different. This brings a lot of variety to my day-to-day work. I like to think outside the box and lend a hand! Questioning things is also part of it. I check whether it is still up to date or whether there is a more efficient way to successfully implement the tasks.

How do you feel about the working atmosphere?

Neither rigid nor formal! It's informal and relaxed here, which contributes to a relaxed atmosphere for me. That's something I find very positive. Whether in the office or previously in production, I was never a personnel number, as is so often the case in large companies.

What career tip would you give other career changers?

Training and education are extremely important. But the journey never ends! You should listen to your gut feeling and change your field of work from time to time. This gives you new impetus and brings life back into your everyday working life! Have the courage and continue your education.
