Two months after the foundation stone was laid, the ZÜBLIN East Directorate, Jena division, completed the shell of the extension to the Thuringian Active School in Emleben - ten weeks ahead of schedule. To celebrate this in style, the traditional topping-out ceremony was held on 19.6.2024. The tradespeople who completed the shell of the building in record time, the managing directors of Gothaer Bildungsgesellschaft as the client, the school management and ZÜBLIN employees were also present.

The future users also took an active part in the celebrations: The pupils of the active school pulled the topping-out tree up to the ridge of the roof themselves to protect the building from damage in accordance with old tradition and to enable happy living and learning in it.

"Construction is particularly fun when the clients are full of expectations of finally being able to move into the new building and we as a construction company can fulfill these expectations. Although we still have some way to go, we are confident that this will work out with the chosen construction method," says Michael Stange, Technical Director of the ZÜBLIN Jena division.

ZÜBLIN extended the school building using the economical, fast and environmentally friendly MOLENO® timber hybrid construction method. ZÜBLIN Timber supplied the load-bearing exterior walls made of cross-laminated timber, which means that - in addition to the concrete work with craftsmen from the Jena area - this added value is also realized using Ed. Züblin AG's own resources. The first timber wall was erected on May 14. The entire shell of the first and second construction phases was completed in time for the topping-out ceremony. The extension is due to open in spring 2025. On two floors, 13 classrooms and 10 group rooms as well as a new specialist cabinet will be built. ZÜBLIN was responsible for the entire execution and structural planning as well as the design and planning of the building services for the two construction phases.

The festive act on the construction site will soon be followed by a planting campaign under the motto "Forest makes school". Together with pupils from the Aktiv-Schule Emleben, around 400 seedlings provided by ZÜBLIN will be planted as the foundation for a new forest area. When fully grown, these trees will provide around 1,200 m3 of timber, which is significantly more than the 185m3 of wood used for the construction of the school building shell.

Fast and sustainable construction with MOLENO®
The MOLENO® timber hybrid construction method developed by ZÜBLIN means that the extension meets high sustainability requirements. While the foundations, ceilings and staircase cores are made of reinforced concrete, cross-laminated timber elements form the outer walls. The storey-high, large-format LENO® elements with cross-laminated spruce boards are dimensionally stable thanks to their structure and can absorb high loads.
Conventional concrete construction would have resulted in a 70 percent higher global warming potential (GWP) and a correspondingly higher CO2 equivalent during shell construction.
