Milestone at the Mannheim green depot: Pioneering work quarter celebrates topping-out ceremony
- Topping-out ceremony to thank the construction team
- Hybrid timber construction with striking timber façade
- Timber construction work expected to end in May 2026
The topping-out ceremony for the green depot in Mannheim was celebrated on 04.12.2025. The shells of the predominantly timber-hybrid construction site are closed. A reason to celebrate!
The topping-out ceremony was organized by the client, GBG Sonderimmobilien GmbH. It served purely as a celebration for the construction team on behalf of the client and was intended to be a moment to pause and celebrate the successful collaboration. All the guests, including those from the ZÜBLIN head office in Karlsruhe and ZÜBLIN Timber, listened attentively to the topping-out speech by timber construction site manager Alexander Schütz, who blessed the building and expressed his thanks to everyone involved. At the same time, the decorated topping-out tree was hoisted into the air. Afterwards, the celebration ended with a chicken dinner and a cozy get-together on the first floor of the main building.
But there was more than just celebrations. In the morning, there was a construction site round with "Lessons Learned". Here, insights from past projects were gathered in order to improve future projects and avoid mistakes.
Timber construction at the green depot
The new work quarter consists of a four-storey main building as well as workshops and a surrounding, U-shaped and greened garage. The main building is a timber hybrid construction. Among other things, 4,400 m² of HBV ceiling elements made of prefabricated concrete slabs and glulam ribs as well as 2,500 m² of wall elements with a tongue and groove timber façade are being used here. The workshops will also be fitted with a striking timber façade and constructed predominantly in timber. Here, 160 m³ of LENO® cross-laminated timber walls and ceilings as well as 2,700 m² of ribbed roof elements are being used.
The shells of the buildings are now closed and the last parapet elements have been installed. The façade formwork, including pilaster strips, is currently still being built. The timber construction work is expected to be completed in May 2026.
