Collegium Academicum receives Baden-Württemberg Timber Construction Prize 2024

The winners of the Baden-Württemberg Timber Construction Award 2024 have now been announced. The winners were presented with their awards by Minister Hauk on May 2. Outstanding buildings, building concepts and pioneering innovations from Baden-Württemberg are honored. Wood plays a central role as a sustainable building material.

Three special projects were awarded a prize, including the Collegium Academicum project in Heidelberg. In this project, a student residence, several exciting aspects come into play at the same time: on the one hand, dealing with the topic of living space, creating affordable living space and then also helping out as a builder. A key point here is to involve the clients in the project and thus create a flexible living space that can be adapted by the residents themselves if necessary. The skeleton structure used for this was developed in collaboration between the structural engineer, timber construction and architects, based on traditional Japanese models. The entire supporting structure is made of timber, including the connecting elements. The geometric connections and nodal points made of wood enable a stable connection of the timber frame construction system. This allows the apartments to be reduced to a minimum in order to give the communal areas more space or even extend them if required.

A high degree of prefabrication of the timber elements, including façades and windows, enabled the project to be completed in record time.

A novelty and innovative in several respects: Here, traditional craftsmanship is combined with state-of-the-art production technology, and also scores points in terms of eco-balance and recyclability.

A great project with a role model function and the creation of urgently needed living space at affordable prices and implemented sustainably.
