BUGA area Spinelli, Mannheim
SPINELLI is a residential quarter with an adjoining parkland on the site of BUGA 23 in Mannheim. The generous open spaces characterise the neighbourhood’s surroundings and create a close connection to the public green spaces.
BPD Immobilienentwicklung GmbH commissioned the ZÜBLIN Karlsruhe office with the turnkey construction of the two residential buildings B11.7 and B9.1 using a timber-hybrid construction method. ZÜBLIN Timber produced the timber-frame walls for the buildings’ external envelopes at its plant in Aichach and undertook the assembly of the entire timber structures, including the façades.
A distinctive feature of building B9.1, designed by Kränzle + Fischer-Wasels, is the conically sloping façade of wooden shingles with its rounded corners. This design placed high demands on the construction, prefabrication and assembly.
The load-bearing structure of the timber-hybrid buildings consists of reinforced concrete slabs, reinforced concrete columns and reinforced concrete stairwells. Together with the timber construction elements, this creates a residential quarter offering a variety of housing options in the immediate vicinity of the park areas of the former BUGA core site.
