Church KGK Immanuelkirche, Cologne

Using sparing means and a simple design language, Sauerbruch Hutton create a transcendent aura for their new Immanuelkirche building in Cologne-Stammheim, which is framed by mature trees. The new building, which was not constructed from reinforced concrete as in the competition, but ultimately in timber construction for cost reasons, is given an unmistakable landmark by the campanile directly on the street. Like the church and the small prayer chapel, the bell tower is clad with diagonal timber cladding made of Siberian larch. A greyish glaze unifies the appearance of the façades.
