Elizabethan Theatre, Condette, France

At its core is the completely covered auditorium - with a rectangular stage projecting into the space and 388 seats spread over three levels. Around the round heart of the theater, the circulation and other uses are arranged like petals around a rose: the foyer lit from above, the main staircase with access to the external balconies and the checkroom area with escape staircase. All segments were made from pre-bent solid spruce panels, a unique method according to Andrew Todd. The entire cylinder is topped by a radial framework of 12-meter-high bamboo poles, specially imported from Bali. The crown of the roof acts as a giant chimney, which ensures a good climate in the auditorium with its gentle air flow. Together with its exceptionally low energy consumption, the "Elizabethan Theatre" is regarded as a pioneer for completely naturally ventilated cultural facilities in France.
