Client:
City of Seville
Construction period:
2005-2011
Location:
Plaza de la Encarnacion, Seville (ES)
Metropol Parasol, Seville
The construction consists of six parasol-like structures with a mushroom-like shape, which are connected in places to form a sunshade.
The building was inspired by the columns of Seville Cathedral and the birch fig trees in the nearby Plaza del Cristo de Burgos. Under the Metropol Parasol there are stores, a market, bars, restaurants and an archaeological museum, the Antiquarium, which houses relics from Roman and Moorish times.
The building with its elevated plaza also makes it possible to hold public events in the open air.
There are corridors on the roof that are accessible as a viewing platform and provide an unobstructed view of the city. For the construction, 3,800 m³ of re-glued laminated veneer lumber (Kerto®) and 700 tons of steel were used for approx. 70,000 parts. The special feature of this project was the use of glued-in threaded rods. The large-format components (up to 4 m x 16 m) were pressure impregnated, calibrated, sanded, glued, robot-processed and packaged in the factory.
