Metropolitan School, Berlin

The Berlin Metropolitan School was founded in 2004 and is the oldest international school in Berlin-Mitte. The existing building is an industrially prefabricated reinforced concrete system construction.
The addition of the extra storey resulted in an expansion of the existing space by more than 1800m2. The challenge was to implement the construction measures while the school was still in operation, meaning that the available space had to grow gradually in line with demand. With this in mind, the extension was designed as a timber construction, which significantly shortened the construction time thanks to the high degree of prefabrication. Due to their low dead weight, the timber roof structures did not require any additional foundations or interventions in the supporting structure of the existing prefabricated buildings.
