Residential building, Rickenbach

The farmhouse stands on a former agricultural family property in a hamlet in the Hotzenwald, with a view of the Swiss Alps. The cubature of the house is based on the original single-roofed farmhouse - "Hotzenhof".

The outer wing of the farm part remains in the form of a shed and is connected to the residential part via an arcade. The section of the building forms a wind-protected inner courtyard. The house has a closed, barn-like character on the north side, while on the south side it presents itself as a residential building and opens up. The landscape is omnipresent through large, carefully positioned windows. The first floor develops into the upper floor via an air space. The gallery and work area also have an open design. The clients' aim was a modern interpretation of farm life: combining working and living, sustainable energy concept (wood heating / PV system). Materials were used in their natural form, all walls and ceilings are raw and untreated. A reinforced concrete core as a storage mass is completely encased by a solid timber construction made of LENO® cross laminated timber. The walls, insulation, façade and windows are made of local fir. The façade is kept simple, with black cut-outs being the only design element. Diamond-shaped decorative cuts quote familiar elements of agricultural buildings and function as ventilation openings. The combination of rough concrete and warm wood creates a pleasant atmosphere and a good living climate. Text/Source: Holzbau Offensive BW, 100 timber buildings in South Baden.
