"Sophien-Carrée" in Karlsruhe

In the Weststadt district of Karlsruhe, a new neighbourhood has been developed on the ‘Sophien-Carrée’ site, comprising a community centre, a nursery and around 150 rental flats.

Wood is a key component of the project. Together with our colleagues at ZÜBLIN Karlsruhe, we have constructed three blocks of flats comprising two- to five-room flats. Our timber-frame construction and LENO® cross-laminated timber elements were used, complemented by timber façades. Wood also defines the interior design: exposed timber ceilings are a characteristic feature of the flats.

The project presented all those involved with particular challenges. The confined space in the city centre required precise planning of the construction processes, whilst the changeable weather placed additional demands on the execution. Thanks to a coordinated weather protection strategy and careful site organisation, these conditions were successfully managed.
