Stuttgart 21 Central Station

Christoph Ingenhoven’s design for Stuttgart 21 Central Station placed high demands on the planning, design and manufacture of the formwork. ZÜBLIN Timber developed and manufactured project-specific formwork solutions for the complex geometry of the cup-shaped columns.

Twenty-eight cup-shaped columns support the roof of the new through station at Stuttgart Central Station. Formwork elements made from coated LENO® cross-laminated timber were used to construct them. The individual cup-shaped columns differ in terms of shape, inclination and length, meaning that customised formwork components were required. Some of the formwork assemblies consisted of up to 58 individual parts and were reused several times.

The specialised formwork had to meet high technical requirements. In addition to the high compressive loads, only minimal deformation of the moulded elements was permitted. Furthermore, the temperature rise of the concrete during the setting process, with temperatures exceeding 75 °C, had an impact on the formwork. At the same time, high standards had to be met for the exposed concrete surface: the aim was to achieve surfaces with as few joints as possible, reduced porosity and a uniform, light-coloured surface finish.
